Dr John Garvey is a General and Diagnostic Surgeon with 30 years experience in a wide range of surgical procedures including hernia repairs, vasectomy, groin reconstruction, breast and gastrointestinal surgery. He is renowned for his work in chronic groin pain and surgery for groin disruption in elite athletes and has treated many sportsmen, including professional footballers from the English Premier League and Socceroos. He also has special expertise in digestive tract endoscopy for ulcers and cancer, and is certified in colonoscopy and gastroscopy with GESA.
After graduating from the University of New South Wales, Dr Garvey worked and trained at St Vincent’s Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals in Sydney, and at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, UK. He commenced his basic surgical research training in the Nuffield Department of Surgery in the University of Oxford (Balliol College).
Additionally, Dr Garvey is skilled in the provision of medico-legal assessments and reports and holds accreditation in the assessment of permanent impairment with SIRA WorkCover NSW and NSW Motor Accident, as well as NSW Personal Injury Commission. He is also an Approved Medical Specialist for WorkCover Tasmania, and is CIME accredited with ABIME.
